ARTIST STATEMENT I am fully engaged in a search for the honest abstract expression of life through interaction with my environment. EXPERIENCE Jan 2005-present Dented Esker Design San Francisco, CA/Eugene, OR Graphic Designer/Artist Continued self-education in the fine arts to include graphic design, website design, pen and ink, and print techniques to augment artistic skills and create new collaborative multi-media works. Design and production of event posters and promotional materials in San Francisco for several organizations, including High Sierra Music Festival, Conservation Values, Headcount, and Sunset Promotions. Guided efforts of 140-member organization dedicated to the promotion and enhancement of live and evolutionary art in San Francisco, including management of volunteers and resources, coordination of interaction with the public, promotions, and fundraising. Involved with the art installation details and visual impact of stages and environments for promotional and festival events within and outside of San Francisco. Aided professional video editors with visual art projections and backdrops during awards events and music productions at such venues as the Great American Music Hall, Independent, and High Sierra Music Festival. Display of stonework and pen and ink series, group show, San Francisco, June 2005. Juried for "Direct Effect" fundraising event in San Francisco to support sustainable agriculture in Nicaragua, 3/2006.
Jan 2000-Jan 2005 Dented Esker Design Brooklin, ME/San Francisco, CA Artist Time as an innkeeper led to experiments in art, resulting in the creation of Dented Esker Design in a response to gallery requests for works. During this period, self-taught aspects of design relating to sculpting techniques in media including, but not limited to, granite and other stone, copper and other metals, wood, castings, concrete, foam, and plastic in 2-D and 3-D forms. During this period, cultivated relationships with local gallery owners for representation, and successfully sold static and kinetic works to collectors across the country through multiple galleries and regular private shows. Successfully self-taught and developed boat building facet to Dented Esker specializing in the restoration and replication of late 1940's Old Town tenders. Three complete boats built during this period encompassing all aspects of the wood and canvas technique, including steam bending, planking, canvas stretching, and the reproduction, manufacture, and research of all materials and specialty tools. First boat, "Fledgling" showcased in WoodenBoat magazine #175, Dec 2003. Contracted in June of 2001 by the Maine State Historical Association to design and create a full-size replica of a c. 1890's harbor mine and educational display for the Fort Knox Visitor Center in Bucksport, Maine. Finished wood and metal work 40" D X 96" H. Install and Governor King opening highlighted in the Ellsworth American, 8/30/2001. Participated as a Mentor in the Brooklin School Art and Enrichment Program. Guided a 14 year old in the art of stone sculpting, successfully producing a large limestone work.
Jan 2000-Oct 2004 Schriever Signs Castine, ME Sign/Graphics Technician Responsibilities included, but were not limited to the production of MDO and foam sign blanks; light design in PC format using Corel and Ami-Pro; cutting, weeding, and application of vinyl design materials on a variety of surfaces, including autos, boats, cintra, and banners up to 24'. Major duties revolved around the production of signage and sign supports and fasteners, as well as other collateral materials and techniques including etched glass, Plexiglas, gold leaf, and mylar. Jan 2000-Oct 2004 Black Flye Inn Brooklin, ME Owner/ Innkeeper Procured 1874 Victorian home in Brooklin, ME and converted it to a 6 bed seasonal inn. All aspects of guest accommodations and inn maintenance were handled, as well as cultivating close interaction with the local Wooden Boat School for student guests and their families. Conversions included sillwork, painting, plaster, walkways, new bathrooms, a 32x10 sun room addition to the structure, decks, patios, and nearly 1/2 acre of gardens and plantings personally created and maintained for the use of patrons and the public.
Dec 1997-Dec 1999 Residential Contractor Various Framer/Finish Carpenter Resumed involvement in all aspects of the building trades, including post and beam restoration and new residential and utility building construction. Experienced in electric and water utilities, foundations, roofing, stone and brick work- everything. Projects during this two-year period include, but are not limited to 5,000 sq ft Mumford design in Cooperstown, NY, 150x60 pole barn in Pyerstown, NY, 2,500 sq ft ranch on Squam Lake in NH, 1,700 sq ft oak p&b home in Milford, NY. Also completed various renovations including bathrooms, slate floors, sill work, etc. on homes in and around Brooklin, ME.
Aug 1997-Nov. 1997 U.S. Forest Service- Star Ranger Station Jacksonville, OR Hydrology Surveyor Weekend continuation of the activities engaged in for the Medford BLM to assist the Forest Service with hydrology surveys of the Red Butte Wilderness on the California/Oregon border. Class determination and mapping of streams, as well as defining bankfull, floodprone area, LWD, gradient, slope, etc. for streams and watersheds.
Jun 1997-Nov 1997 Bureau of Land Management, Medford District Medford, OR Watershed Surveyor Responsible for determining riparian condition and collection of environmental data necessary to select levels of protection and restoration required by the Northwest Forest Plan. Particularly, Rosgen classification, riparian vegetation, stream morphology, and endangered species habitat identification. Extensive use of aerial photographs and GPS data to locate study sites in the Siskiyou mountains along the Applegate River corridor.
Jan 1997-Jun 1997 Carl Chase Brooksville, ME Steel Drum (Instrument) Manufacturer Hammered specially ordered 55-gallon drums into drum blanks for instruments to be sold across the United States. Constant and repetitive hammering with #6 sledge to stretch the steel, finish with Teflon smoothing process. Proper technique required extreme attention to detail while working outdoors for hours at a time in Maine winter climate.
Nov 1996- Jun 1997 Brion Rieff Brooklin, ME Boatbuilder Tasked with the restoration and construction aspects of several wooden boat projects, including new hull on 1955 Luders 16, lofting and hull of new Handy Billy 18, and cold-molding hull of 32' Brion Rieff design "Arrow". Worked closely with designer and others to manufacture all historic and contemporary boat needs/parts for each project including bronze, wood, and composites.
Jul 1994- Sep 1996 Gray Ranch- Animas Foundation Animas, NM GIS/GPS Technician Created and maintained GIS database for 502 square mile Gray Ranch. Covered over 3,000 miles of terrain on foot collecting point/line/area features of cultural, biological, and historical value through desert and mountainous terrain. Mission planning and implementing techniques for aerial ungulate surveys, wood/rangeland study plots, and water resource locating. Also served as a guide for researchers and Nature Conservancy staff to ecological and historic ranch features. Led crew in the construction of a $500,000 greenhouse in the desert. All aspects of adobe/tufa construction, bancos, Rumford fireplaces, evaporative cooler/louver systems, and indoor fish pond. Restoration of Upshaw Ranch, including stone walls, split-rail fencing, and artistic installations from windmill parts.
